Squirrel

Yesterday i discovered (with some help ;-) the latest hidden emoticon:

(heidy) = (heidy)

And for those who are new to Skype, here are the other hidden ones:

(mooning) = (mooning)

(finger) = (finger)

(bandit) = (bandit)

(drunk) = (drunk)

(smoking) = (ci)

(toivo) = (toivo)

(rock) = (rock)

(banghead) = (headbang)

(hrv) = (poolparty)

(swear) = (swear)

(bug) = (bug)

(heidy) = (fubar)

(tmi) = (tmi)

Some explanations:
(toivo) = Toivo Annus is the name of a former Skype Staff member. He was head of engineering. His "signature" on the Skype Forum was "Dog ate my headset"!

(heidy) = is probably also a Skype Staff member or at least somebody related with Skype. I found this phrase on the Skype Blogs: "I just got off a video test call from a Lufthansa flight over the Atlantic on Boeing Connexion wifi service. I saw Heidy waving to me from the cafeteria in Tallinn."

(kate) = is an alternative to a known and shown emoticon. Try it! But who is this? There was a Skype Staff member called Kate. You can find her 3 posts under the Skype Forum name "Skype-Kate_"

(london) = is also an alternative to a known and shown emoticon. Quite funny!

There is another emoticon (poolparty), but you better dont ask about the reason for this one ;)

Jean Mercier said...

Hey Martin,
I know it, but perhaps YOU know the reason and could tell us what you know ;-)

Try also (flag:it) (flag:de) etc

Jean Mercier said...

Matteo,

Thanks for the hint, probably some readers don't know it, but indeed country flags are already available since several months as "hidden emoticons".

Indeed (flag:be), (flag:br), (flag:us), etc. are available in your chats.

What about Skype 4, are there any new hidden emoticons for this new version?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jean - thanks for all the background info on the emoticoms - do you know whom to contact re. a wrong flag icon? The Democratic Republic of Congo's actual flag is a light blue back with a yellow-red-yellow diagonal slash (from bottom left corner to top right corner) and 5-pointed star in the top left corner.
Cheers, Alx.

Jean Mercier said...

Hello Alx,

In my version of Skype (4.1.0.179) the flag of the RD Congo (flag:cd) is the right one. It could be that the version you use is an older one. You should know that the icons and emoticions are hidden inside the client. Therefore, if you have an old version, flags don't get updated.

Anyway thanks for the remark.

On a Mac you can go into package contents of the program, Resources / Emoticons, then show package contents of Animated Emoticons.SkypeEmoticonset. In there is Emoticons.plist, and you can remove the xml that hides certain icons (do a find/replace all in textedit), and even create new emoticons (save a gif and png under a subsequent numbered name in the same package content folder, adding the appropriate xml by copying and pasting toward the end of the .plist, then editing to match your new filenames) Of course you have to have your other contacts add the same files in their application contents... they can just copy the files you send them into the same location and restart Skype. Pretty neat trick that actually isn't too hard to do!

Jean Mercier said...

Thanks for the trick Paul! You have the same name as one of my brothers who is also a Mac user!

paul said...

I updated skype and they no longer use xml in their plist... effectively making it harder to customize like I mentioned earlier, sorry

(plane) (aeroplane)
(island)
After me and one of my contacts found that we didn't have the same emojis anymore - I suddenly had more - and read about hidden ones, we tried to type lots of stuff in brackets, just to see and as a joke. Alas, only the two above seem to exist/work and are not in any list we found.

Judith said...

(hollest) doesn't work anymore. No more mini-skirted walking legs. Here's another list with hidden, standard, deleted and country emoticons.

http://www.skype.rs/

Jean Mercier said...

Hello Judith,

Thanks for your comments on my "old" post. Indeed some old emojis disappeared since Microsoft took Skype over, the American sense of humor or tolerance is quite different from the European ... so be it.

What is your Skype version, and on which platform are you working? Apple? Because (plane) and (island) do not work on my Skype 7.5.0.102 for Windows.

Unknown said...

About the flag emojis, a helpful note is that the country name here follows ISO-3166 standard for country names with 2 characters - the same standard used for internet domain assignment per country.

Jean Mercier said...

Obrigado Eduardo,

não sabia isso!
